Obituary, Starr Q. Zimmerman

 

Starr Q. Zimmerman, formerly of Goshen, NY, Millbrook, NY, Manhattan, and Pézenas, France, died on April 16, 2016, at the Putnam Ridge Nursing Facility in Brewster, NY. She was 97.

A teacher of students in need of special education in the New York City public school system, Mrs. Zimmerman was a lifelong advocate of civil rights and liberal causes and a devotee of the arts. She and her husband, the late Edward J.P. Zimmerman, a tax attorney who died in 2006, traveled widely and were devoted Francophiles, having resided part time in the Languedoc region of southwestern France in retirement. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from Shorter College, in Rome, GA, and a Master of Education degree in educational psychology from Hunter College (CUNY) and for many years continued her study of psychology at the Teachers College of Columbia University.

She was born Starr Reynolds Quigg in Rome, GA, on October 4, 1918, the daughter of the former Annie Mae Bass and Byard Fowler Quigg. A marriage to Robert Slaton Clemmons ended in divorce.

In addition to her husband, Edward, Mrs. Zimmerman was preceded in death by her brother, Lt. Byard G. Quigg, USMC, who was killed in action in World War II during the Battle of Saipan (1944); her sister Julia Quigg Dodd (2013); her daughter Diana Clemmons Kaval (2014); and a grandson, Jonathan A. Clemmons (1993).

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Quigg O’Beirne of Natchez, MS; her sons Byard Q. Clemmons of Troy, NY, and Thomas S. Clemmons of Pawling, NY; two stepdaughters, Stair Z. Calhoun of Falls Church, VA, Pamela Z. Brislin, of South Hamilton, MA, a stepson, Robert H. Zimmerman, also of Falls Church; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral service is planned for Friday, May 6th at 2 PM at the Horn & Thomes, Inc., Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY (tel.: 845-855-3550).  Burial will follow in Pawling Cemetery.
