Rita Houlberg Brengel, of Village Heights, London, Ky., passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016. She was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Volmer H. Houlberg and Sara (nee McKee) Houlberg, and moved to Sherman, Conn. in 1934. Rita attended the University of Connecticut and was executive secretary for the Foundation for Christian Living, Pawling, N.Y. (distributor for Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s sermons). She served in the U.S. Navy WAVES, NAS Rodd Field, Corpus Christi, Texas 1942-1945. She married Dexter Brengel in 1955. Rita was business manager for her husband’s electrical contractor company, Center Service Electric in Sherman for 25 years. They moved to Sun City Summerlin, Las Vegas, NV in 1989. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, US Navy WAVES National, American Legion Post #76, and retired women of NEVADA Gems unit #146 of Las Vegas. Upon moving to London in 2007, she attended Corinth Baptist Church and Slate Hill Baptist Church and volunteered at St. Joseph Pediatric Clinic in London. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dexter Brengel; her parents, Volmer and Sara Houlberg; her twin sister, Alice Rogers; her nephew, Stuart Rogers; and her cousins, Janet, Dickson and Kevin McKee. Rita is survived by two stepsons, D. Theodore Brengel and Robert T. Brengel DO; three grandchildren, Rachel, Ruth and Daniel; niece, Carol R. Burns; and six cousins, William, Richard and Peter Houlberg and Annie, Peter and Christian Steentoft. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Slate Hill Baptist Church, 2080 Barbourville Blvd, Hwy 229, London, KY 40743, with Pastor Homer Johnson officiating.
