Webutuck Superintendent of Schools Letter regarding arrest of student

March 4, 2016

Dear Webutuck Parents and Guardians,

As you may be aware, this past Monday, February 29, 2016 the Webutuck High School and Intermediate School went into a Shelter-in-Place for over two hours. The reason to go into a Shelter-in-Place was based upon a “threat of school violence” found in one of our student restrooms.

New York State Police responded immediately to our request for their assistance. The State Police conducted a thorough search of the school and determined that the threat was unsubstantiated.

Subsequently, an investigation by the New York State Police occurred. Late Wednesday evening, an arrest was made. A high school student was charged with “making a terroristic threat” against a school. The defendant appeared and was arraigned in the Town of North East Justice Court. After being released on his own recognizance, the student is due to reappear in court March 4, 2016.

A restraining order prohibiting the student from the Webutuck Central School District is in place. Faculty and Staff are cognizant of the need for constant vigilance and awareness.

As always, we strive to provide the safest environment in order for the education of our students. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at Raymond.castellani@webutuck.org or call me at 845-373-4100.

Sincerely,

Raymond Castellani Superintendent of Schools RC/tmt
