Obituary, Richard L. Miranda

 

MIRANDA – Richard L., died February 17, 2016 peacefully at home among family and friends. The son of Nicholas and Georgiana Miranda, Richard was born and raised in Jamaica Estates with a second home in Millbrook, NY. Richard attended Chaminade High School, graduating in 1954. He went on to attend Syracuse University and graduated in 1958 with a degree in journalism. Upon graduation, Richard joined his father at Newhouse Newspapers as a reporter. Later, he signed on with the Long Island Press as its daily court reporter.

Richard served as executive assistant to then presiding supervisor of the town of Hempstead, Alphonse D’Amato, until 1978, when Richard took the position of Deputy Commissioner to the Town of Hempstead Department of Conservation and Waterways, a post he held until his retirement in 1995. While serving in that position, he earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from Long Island University. Through the latter part of his career, Richard remained an advisor and confident to an influential United States Senator. After retirement, Richard took on several journalistic positions, serving as director of public relations at SUNY Maritime College, senior correspondent at the Long Island Tribune, and editor for the Millbrook Roundtable, a newspaper in upstate Dutchess County. Richard was an avid deep sea diver, making several dives to the sunken passenger liner Andrea Doria. He was a licensed sea captain and captained his own charter dive boat. Along with diving, Richard was an accomplished skier, hunter, and enthusiastic outdoorsman. He is survived by his sons Adam, Richard, and Eric; daughters Elizabeth, Justine, and (predec-eased) Kelly Jon. In addition, he is survived by 14 grandchildren and one great grandson. Visitation at Barnes – Sorrenti Funeral Home, 538 Hempstead Ave., West Hempstead, NY 11552, Saturday 7-9 pm and Sunday 2-4 pm and 7-9pm. Services at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Roman Catholic Church in Point Lookout Monday 10:30 am on February 22, 2016.
