Somers, New York – On February 13, 2016 at approximately 12:15 p.m., Troopers were dispatched to a report of a dog that had fallen into a partially frozen pond located behind JFK High School.
Updates given to the responding officer indicated that the dog’s owner was possibly attempting to rescue the animal prior to police and fire assistance arriving on scene.
When Trooper Christopher Spallone, a 10-year veteran of the State Police stationed at SP Somers arrived on scene, he noted that the dog appeared to be in distress due to the frigid water temperature. He walked onto the ice and was able to successfully rescue the yellow lab named Shelby. As Trooper Spallone was returning to the shore line, the ice fractured and he fell into the water. Officer Dustin from Somers PD and Somers Fireman Michael Cyrulik assisted Trooper Spallone from the icy water to the shore line. Officer Dustin was also exposed to the cold water when he entered the pond to assist the Trooper.
Troopers Spallone was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital by the Somers Fire Department where he was treated and released. Officer Dustin was treated at the scene and declined further medical treatment. Shelby is expected to make a full recovery.
