Mahopac Man Faces Drug Charges

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Mahopac man who was determined to be in possession of illegal drugs during a traffic stop.

On February 8, 2016, at 1:44 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Irwin stopped a motorist who had committed traffic violations on Route 6 in Mahopac. Upon approach of the vehicle, the deputy detected an odor of marijuana emanating from the interior of the vehicle. An investigation revealed that a passenger in the vehicle, identified as Michael P. Martin, 21, of 62 Craescot Way, Mahopac was in possession of quantities of marijuana and heroin. The deputy arrested Mr. Martin and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a misdemeanor; and with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, a violation. The defendant was processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility and held pending arraignment.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charge, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00.
