ALBANY — Zephyr Teachout, who ran in a 2014 Democratic primary against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, says she is “thinking” about a run for Congress in the Hudson Valley district being vacated by Rep. Chris Gibson.

Teachout, a professor at Fordham Law School, confirmed her interest in representing the district, which covers parts of 11 counties in the Hudson Valley and Catskills, from Kingston to suburban Troy.

“A lot of people have asked me about it, and I’m definitely flattered. I’m thinking about it,” she wrote in an email to POLITICO New York.

Teachout has an apartment in Brooklyn, but said she has kept a residence in Dover Plains since 2015 near a train station that makes commuting to Fordham possible.

Gibson, a Republican from Kinderhook, announced last year that he would not seek re-election in November but is instead pondering a run for statewide office in 2018. Possible Republican successors include John Faso, Andrew Heaney and Assemblyman Pete Lopez, but Democrats lost their marquee candidate when Ulster County executive Mike Hein said he was taking a pass on the race.
