Parolee Charged With Grand Larceny

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a parolee from Poughkeepsie on grand larceny charges following an incident at a Carmel supermarket.

On December 10, 2015 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Deputy Sheriff Adam McKechnie responded to a 911 report of a dispute in the parking lot of the Shop Rite supermarket located at 170 Route 52 in the Town of Carmel. It was reported that a Shop Rite employee had confronted a shoplifting suspect in the parking lot; that a dispute between the two subjects had ensued; and that the suspect fled on foot towards the Sunoco station at the corner of Route 52 and Dykeman Road. The suspect was observed at the Sunoco station by Senior Investigator Thomas Corless and then fled on foot towards Manchester Road. The suspect was apprehended by Corless and McKechnie after a brief foot chase. The suspect was identified as Thomas J. McNulty, 48, of 35 Davis Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York. The officers determined that Mr. McNulty was wanted by the New York State Division of Parole for a parole violation. Mr. McNulty was transported back to the Shop Rite parking lot where he was identified by employees of the store. At the time of the incident, Mr. McNulty had been observed placing items of stolen merchandise from Shop Rite into a vehicle belonging to a friend of Mr. McNulty. That merchandise, valued at over $1,100.00, was recovered as well as merchandise that was stolen from the Acme Supermarket in Mahopac.

Mr. McNulty was charged with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a felony. He was arraigned in the Town of Kent Justice Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility pending a future court appearance and further action by NYS Division of Parole. Additionally, a felony grand larceny charge will be pending in the Town of Carmel based upon the incident at the Mahopac supermarket.

If found guilty of the current felony charge, the defendant could face up to four years in a New York State Correctional Facility and a fine.
