State Police arrest Hyde Park man following lengthy burglary investigation

Wappinger, New York– On December 3, 2015, New York State Police from the Wappinger Bureau of Criminal Investigation concluded a lengthy investigation into the burglary of the Town of Wappinger residence.  Shawn M. Smith, 28 years old, of Hyde Park, New York, was arrested for Burglary in the 2nd Degree, a Class C Felony.

In August of 2013, Troopers were dispatched to investigate a residential burglary that occurred on Old Hopewell Road.  The victim reported that over $8,000 worth of jewelry and foreign currency was stolen from her home.

Smith was identified as a suspect through DNA evidence that was recovered during the course of the investigation.  Subsequent to learning about the DNA evidence, Smith was arrested by the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department for a burglary that occurred in their jurisdiction.

On December 3, 2015, Smith was charged with the August of 2013 burglary and arraigned in the Town of Wappinger Court.  He was returned to the custody of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s office where he is currently lodged.

The State Police were assisted by the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office and the Town of Fishkill Police Department.
