MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT

The 2015 Medicare Open Enrollment dates begin this Thursday, October 15th and run throughMonday, December 7th.  During this time, you may choose to switch prescription drug plans or stay with the plan that you currently have.  It may be possible to save money, get better coverage, or both by investigating the choices.  During the open enrolment period, you will be able to view the new plans and make any changes to your coverage on the Medicare website: www.medicare.gov.

To help you make informed decisions, the Office for the Aging has partnered with the Poughkeepsie Journal to produce a special Medicare supplement that is included with Sunday’s edition.  Many of the articles can also be viewed on their website:  http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/search/medicare/ .

If you need one-on-one assistance, volunteers and staff from Dutchess County government’s Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) are available for appointments.  Please call our office for more information at 486-2555.  Be sure to call early as appointments fill up fast and all plan changes must be made by December 7th.

MEDICARE ORIENTATION

If you are approaching the age of 65, and would like to learn more about Medicare in general, the Office for the Aging has several Medicare Orientation programs coming up this month.  Our monthly program at the Poughkeepsie Galleria will be held on Wednesday, October 21st at 10:00 AM.  Northern Dutchess residents can take in the session on Monday, October 26th at 4:00 PM at the Center for Healthy Aging at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.  For those in the Pawling area, there will be a session at the Pawling Library on Wednesday evening, October 28th at 6:30 p.m.  Register for either of these upcoming sessions by calling our office at 486-2555.

WILLS & TRUSTS AMONG SEMINAR TOPICS

Among the 12 sessions scheduled for the Office for the Aging’s Senior Seminars coming up on November 5th are two regarding financial planning.  At 10:30 a.m., Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union will present a program on avoiding financial abuse that is specifically aimed at seniors and their caregivers.    According to the True Link Report on Elder Financial Abuse 2015, American seniors are losing $36.48 billion every year to senior fraud, exploitation and abuse.  Learn the facts to protect yourself at this important seminar.

At 11:30 a.m., Attorney John Wirth, Jr. will explain the differences between a will and the many types of trusts.  This part of estate planning can be very complicated and everyone’s situation is different.  Now is the time to learn as much as possible about what actions you should take to ensure a healthy financial future.  At last year’s seminars, this session was standing room only, so register early to save your spot this year.

Also on the schedule that morning are three sessions focusing on senior housing, another three with an exercise-related focus, including how to get motivated, Tai Chi and Qi Gong.  Sessions on hearing loss, Parkinson’s disease, a question and answer session with the County Executive, and avoiding back pain and injuries are also on the schedule.  For more information, or to register for any of the seminars, call the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555.
