FALL IS THE TIME FOR FALL PREVENTION

The Office for the Aging will be participating in MidHudson Regional Hospital of Westchester Medical Center Division of Trauma Services’ “Fall Prevention for Older Adults Comprehensive Screening Day” on Wednesday, October 7th.  The event will be held in the Sr. Ann Elizabeth Conference Room (located on the ground floor of the Atrium building). Free fall prevention screenings will be conducted from 10:00AM to 3:00PM.  In addition to clinicians and staff from MHRH and representatives from the Office for the Aging, personnel from Emergency Medical Services will also participate in these screening sessions.  Refreshments and door prizes will be provided.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of three adults aged 65 and older will fall each year. Among these adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries. In 2013, emergency rooms treated 2.3 million older adults for nonfatal falls, and more than 734,000 of these patients were hospitalized. Direct medical costs totaled in excess of $34 billion.  In addition, 20 to 30 percent of older adults who fall will suffer moderate to severe injuries, including lacerations, hip fractures and head traumas. Injuries such as these make it more difficult for older adults to live independently and can increase the risk of early death.

The goal of screening day is to identify older adults who are at risk for a fall and assist them in building a “My Falls Free Plan.” Those who participate in this event will be taking “a first step” toward maintaining a healthy and falls-free lifestyle.  Space is limited.  Call 431-8159 to schedule your screening day appointment.

SUCCESSFUL AGING

One of the biggest concerns of senior citizens as they age is the possibility of losing their independence.  Giving up driving, going into a nursing home, or even a loss of memory from dementia are all major concerns.  In the past, genes were the overwhelming factor in how well you aged.  Now, studies have shown that genes play only about a 20 percent role in successful aging.  There are many factors to successful aging that we have control over.

Are you are interested in learning about some of the steps that can help you live independently longer? Keep you driving longer?  Help you avoid or delay dementia for as long as possible?  The Office for the Aging is presenting a one-hour program entitled Successful Aging that highlights the 12 steps every adult should know for a better quality of life.

This month, you have two chances to catch Successful Aging.  This Tuesday, October 6th, the program will be presented at the Milan Town Hall, 20 Wilcox Circle (just off Route 199).  Everyone is invited to join the Milan Seniors for a “bring your own” lunch at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at12:15 p.m. Coffee and tea will be provided.  You can also catch Successful Aging on Thursday, October 15th at St. Martin de Porres Nativity Center, 118 Cedar Valley Rd., in Poughkeepsie at 7 p.m.
