BACK INJURY PREVENTION

With four out of five people suffering from back pain at some point in their lives, back issues are quickly becoming one of the most common reasons someone might visit their physician.  At home or work, we constantly lift, push, pull and put strain on our backs.   That’s why Northern Dutchess Hospital is offering an injury prevention program, Back School, from 6 PM to 8 PM. on Thursday, September 17th in the hospital’s board room located at 6511 Springbrook Ave. in Rhinebeck.

At Back School, participants will learn how to care for their backs, including proper body mechanics, the correct way to move and position the body, lifestyle changes and proper lifting techniques. The class is designed to help people make simple modifications and avoid common mistakes.  “It’s important to know your body’s limitations and how to prevent your back against strains and sprains through good habits,” said Larry Flowers, physical therapy assistant at Northern Dutchess Hospital.  For information or to reserve a seat, call 845-871-3427.

This back safety course is also being offered in a shorter format as part of the Office for the Aging’s Senior Seminars program on Thursday, November 5th at the New Hackensack Reformed Church in Wappinger at 11:30 AM.  To register for this version of the program, call 845-486-2555.  For a complete schedule of Senior Seminars see page 5 of the Spotlight on Seniors:  http://www.co.dutchess.ny.us/CountyGov/Departments/Aging/spotlight_on_seniors_fall_2015.pdf.

VETERANS ELIGIBLE FOR REFUND

Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) and Dutchess County Clerk Bradford Kendall announced today that any veteran who paid a fee to receive a distinguishing mark on their driver’s license or ID after October 2012 will be eligible for a reimbursement.

Last year, a bill was signed into law suspending the fee for veterans to receive a special indicator on their DMV documents, but veterans had been paying the fee since October 2012. This new measure makes the effective date of that law retroactive, so those who paid the fee since that time will be eligible for reimbursement. The bill was championed by County Clerks and veteran advocates across the state, passed both houses of the Legislature earlier this year and was signed into law in August.

According to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, each eligible customer will get a letter and a refund check from the state automatically. For more information, please visit:  http://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/veteran-status-designation-photo-document

Transportation Council to Host Workshops to Gather Public Input for its Long-range Transportation Plan

In addition to the scheduled workshops, the PDCTC has issued a brief survey requesting the public’s input in identifying and prioritizing the county’s transportation needs. The survey will be available until September 8th. To participate in the survey, go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/MovingDutchess2. Please note that all survey responses are kept anonymous.

“The PDCTC has already received more than 700 responses to their transportation survey,” said County Executive Marc Molinaro. “We are continuing our outreach efforts by offering these public workshops which will provide additional opportunities for residents to have their concerns heard. I encourage all residents to take part in the transportation survey and attend one of the scheduled workshops. Your input will help us to recognize and map out the county’s transportation needs moving forward.”
