Taxing – Terrence Murphy!

Recently the campaign of Taxing Terrence Murphy, as he’s been called by others, released a statement condemning Medicare For All legislation. He refers to Crain’s, a business publication, claim that it would raise taxes.

There are other studies that show massive tax savings, those Mr. Murphy did not reference, but they include well researched reports from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the well regarded Urban Institute.

People, like you and me, are facing dramatic insurance increases as the US Congress rips apart the Affordable Care Act, even removing provisions covering preexisting conditions. Not only will more people be unable to afford insurance, many won’t be able to get it at any cost.

I got into this race because the Murphy team claimed to have “no position” on Medicare For All (passed by the State Assembly three times), the Affordable Care Act or putting Medicare and Medicaid into block grants, which would be tragic for New Yorkers. I asked then, as I ask now, what is New York State doing proactively to protect New Yorkers from the outrageous actions of the Trump administration and Congress?  We now have our answer…nothing, nothing at all.

It isn’t as though Mr. Murphy has an aversion to tax increases, he voted to raise taxes while on the Yorktown Town Board and more recently claimed credit for hundreds of millions going to fight opioid addiction and millions of dollars to protect taxpayers in Buchanan when Indian Point closes down. He is forever photographed passing out oversized checks of our tax dollars across the 40th Senate District, supporting his party leaders demand for more taxpayer funded-no accountability charter schools (robbing public school students and teachers of essential dollars) and the list goes on.

Based on his actions, Mr. Murphy is no stranger to raising and using tax dollars for select goals, so why does he stand opposed to healthcare for all New Yorkers?  It might be time for journalists to investigate just how much campaign funding Republicans in New York and Washington receive from the insurance industry, that might tell us all we need to know. For me, it’s time to put people over politics and discuss these issues with the public, not hide behind releases quoting campaign spokespeople.

My first Town Hall addressed the healthcare issue, we’ve held eight since then. When are you going to hold a Town Hall meeting on healthcare?
