Designer of New York City’s most beloved gardens, Lynden B. Miller has long been a champion of public gardens not only for the well-being of city inhabitants and their communities, but also as a viable source for economic development in cities. She started her public garden design career with the rescue and restoration of the Conservatory Garden in Central Park in 1982, at a time when parks were derelict, trash ridden and dangerous. Trained as a fine arts painter and horticulturist Miller uses plants in the landscape as her palette. Her public works projects in New York City include; Bryant Park, The New York Botanical Garden, Battery Park City, Hudson River Park, 97th Street Park Avenue Mall, Museum of Modern Art, British Garden in Hanover Square, and Fort Tyron Park. She has also designed landscape improvements to the campuses of Columbia, Princeton, and Stony Brook. Her book Parks, Plants and People: Beautifying the Urban Landscape (Norton2009) won the 2010 American Horticultural Society Book Award. She presently teaches at New York University and Columbia, and continues to direct the Conservatory Garden. Her motto is “Make it gorgeous and they will come. Keep it that way and they will help.”

Lynden B. Miller sites Beatrix Farrand’s design legacy as influential and central to her public works designs, and has titled her lecture: BEATRIX FARRAND AS MENTOR. More Speaker info: www.publicgardendesign.com

A Reception and Garden Party will follow in the historic Farrand Garden at Bellefield featuring an Heirloom Plant Sale of prized cultivars from the garden at Bellefield, a Garden Boutique by the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Historical Association, and Afternoon Tea among hundreds of peonies and Beatrix Farrand’s signature palette of plants.

THE BELLEFIELD DESIGN LECTURE and GARDEN PARTY is an annual fundraiser created by the Beatrix Farrand Garden Association (BFGA) in collaboration with the National Park Service, and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. The lecture series brings noted speakers to the Hudson Valley to speak on topics including art, architecture, decorative arts, and gardens to celebrate exceptional design and inspire the public.

THE GARDEN at BELLEFIELD DESIGNED in 1912 is one of only a handful of Farrand’s myriad landscapes that remains intact, and is one of the earliest existing examples of her private commissions. As the earliest example of her private work, the garden at Bellefield is a striking illustration of Farrand’s masterful design, and provides an ideal platform to tell this pioneering woman’s story through lectures, tours and educational programs. Bellefield is located on the property of the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. More info: beatrixfarrandgardenhydepark.org

THE BEATRIX FARRAND GARDEN ASSOCIATION (BFGA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and sharing the environmental and design legacy of Beatrix Farrand. By restoring and preserving her garden at Bellefield and offering educational programs, the association increases public appreciation of Farrand’s pioneering work. The Beatrix Farrand Garden Association maintains a close working relationship with the National Park Service.
