Teen Arrested in Deadly Navy Yard Shooting Near Nationals Park

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of another teenager earlier this year near an Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) meeting in Navy Yard, just blocks from Nationals Park, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced.

Suspect and Charges

Leroy Dixon, 17, of Southeast D.C., has been charged as an adult under Title 16 with second-degree murder while armed in the death of Dominique Dingle, 16, also of Southeast.

The May 20 Shooting

MPD officers responded at approximately 9:41 p.m. on May 20 to the 1000 block of 3rd Place SE after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found Dingle unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds.

D.C. Fire and EMS arrived shortly afterward and pronounced Dingle dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred about 30 minutes after the conclusion of a Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves game at Nationals Park, raising safety concerns due to the timing and location in a busy neighborhood.

Investigation and Arrest

On Monday, August 12, police arrested Dixon on a D.C. Superior Court warrant. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting or whether the suspect and victim knew each other.

Community Impact

The killing shook the Navy Yard community, as it took place near an ANC meeting and in a popular entertainment district. City officials have been under pressure to address youth violence and ensure public safety in high-traffic areas.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are urging anyone with additional information to contact MPD.
