One Dead, Six Injured in Highway 97 Crash South of Deschutes River Woods

BEND, Ore. – A two-vehicle crash on Highway 97 left one woman dead and six others injured Thursday night just south of Deschutes River Woods, according to the Oregon State Police (OSP).


How the Crash Happened

Troopers reported that around 9:49 p.m., a vehicle traveling northbound crossed the center line near milepost 145 and collided head-on with a southbound vehicle.

The woman driving the northbound car was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending family notification.


Injuries Reported

The driver of the southbound vehicle, along with five passengers, sustained injuries in the crash.

  • The driver suffered minor injuries.

  • A passenger and four juvenile passengers, all from Oregon City, sustained serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Authorities have not provided updates on their current conditions.


Road Closure and Investigation

Highway 97 was closed for approximately three hours following the collision as investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage.

OSP troopers are continuing to investigate what caused the northbound driver to cross into oncoming traffic. Factors such as impairment, distraction, or speed have not yet been confirmed.

The Oregon State Police said additional details, including the names of those involved, will be released as the investigation progresses.

Authorities are urging drivers to use caution, particularly on major highways at night, where head-on collisions often have devastating outcomes.
