Newburgh Man Convicted of Robbing 10-Year-Old Boy, Faces Prison Time

Newburgh, NY — A Newburgh man has been convicted for robbing a 10-year-old boy of babysitting money in broad daylight, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced Thursday.

Conviction on All Charges

Jamar Murry-El, 31, was found guilty by a jury of Robbery in the Third Degree, Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He now faces a sentence of 3.5 to 7 years in state prison.

Following the verdict, Murry-El was remanded to Orange County Jail without bail and is scheduled for sentencing on October 22.

Incident on a Newburgh Porch

The charges stem from an incident that took place on October 18, 2024, around 5:00 p.m. in the City of Newburgh.

According to prosecutors, the 10-year-old victim was carrying $200 in cash, given by his parents to deliver to a babysitter. As the child stood on the porch of the babysitter’s residence, Murry-El approached him and asked for $10.

When the child refused, explaining that the money was for the babysitter, Murry-El forcibly grabbed the entire $200 and fled the scene.

Quick Police Response

Police were called immediately and located Murry-El nearby. The child identified him as the suspect, leading to his swift arrest.

District Attorney Hoovler praised both the victim’s courage and the efforts of local officers.

“The child’s testimony was instrumental in securing this conviction, and the quick work of the City of Newburgh Police Department ensured justice was served,” Hoovler said.

Sentencing Ahead

Murry-El will return to court on October 22 for sentencing. He faces up to seven years behind bars for the daylight robbery.
