Father of Rescued Boy Donates $10,000 to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue

BETHESDA, MD — A heartwarming gesture of gratitude followed a dramatic water rescue in Montgomery County last week. Selva Jayaraman, the father of a 12-year-old boy who was saved from a flash flood, has donated $10,000 to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) to thank the first responders who saved his son and others from rising waters.

Flash Flood Turns Dangerous in Bethesda

The incident unfolded on Thursday, July 31, when heavy rain caused flash flooding at the intersection of Bradley Boulevard and Mercy Hollow Lane in Bethesda. What began as a single vehicle stranded in rising waters quickly escalated into a multi-vehicle emergency.

MCFRS units arrived at the scene and were alerted by Montgomery County Police to a second vehicle that was fully submerged in floodwaters. Responders quickly realized the situation was critical.

In a harrowing moment, crews spotted an 8-year-old boy standing on the roof of the submerged car. Inside the vehicle, an adult woman and a 2-year-old child were trapped. Jayaraman’s son was among the group of six individuals ultimately rescued from both vehicles.

Swift Water Rescue Teams Save the Day

Thanks to the rapid and coordinated actions of MCFRS Swift Water Rescue teams, all six people were pulled to safety without serious injuries. The team’s quick thinking and specialized training were key to avoiding what could have been a tragic outcome.

Speaking about the incident, Jayaraman praised the responders’ courage and professionalism. “They didn’t hesitate. They risked their lives to save my son and others,” he said. “This donation is just a small gesture to show how much we appreciate what they did.”

A Grateful Gift

On Sunday, Jayaraman made a $10,000 donation to MCFRS. He emphasized that no amount of money could truly repay what the firefighters had done for his family, but he hoped the contribution would support the department’s lifesaving mission and help equip them for future emergencies.

MCFRS officials expressed deep appreciation for the donation. “Our team trains year-round for high-risk scenarios like this,” said a department spokesperson. “We are incredibly thankful for the community’s support and the recognition of our firefighters’ dedication.”

A Reminder of Summer Storm Dangers

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly severe weather can turn dangerous. Flash floods are especially hazardous for drivers, and officials continue to urge the public to avoid flooded roadways and “turn around, don’t drown.”

Thanks to the bravery of MCFRS responders and the generosity of a grateful father, this rescue story ends with lives saved—and a powerful show of community support.
