NORTH DAKOTA – As President Trump moves to place Washington, D.C.’s law enforcement under federal authority, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R–ND) says he would support the idea, at least in part, starting with policing.
Speaking on The Flag radio show ahead of Trump’s Monday press conference, Cramer said:
“Maybe law and order is the first area that we should look at… it’s amazing how much better the federal government would be at it than the District of Columbia itself.”
During that press conference, Trump announced that the Metropolitan Police Department would be placed under federal control and the National Guard would be deployed. On social media, Trump claimed crime in the capital was out of control, writing: “Crime, Savagery, Filth, and Scum will DISAPPEAR. I will MAKE OUR CAPITAL GREAT AGAIN!”
While Trump described D.C.’s mayor as “a good person,” he also criticized worsening crime numbers and the city’s appearance.
Cramer questioned the city’s management and pointed to its unique constitutional status.
“The founders created D.C. to not be a city or a state… You don’t really have a community, so to speak. You have a federal capital and I do think that more of it should be under the federal government.”
He also argued that multiple agencies, including the U.S. Capitol Police and city police, need to work more efficiently together.
“You have a hodgepodge and it’s not very well managed… Maybe at the very least for security purposes we could take that [law enforcement] part of it and put it under federal jurisdiction.”
Cramer stopped short of calling for a full federal takeover but emphasized that law enforcement reform should be the starting point.
