VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the woman who died in an early morning apartment fire on May 2 in Vancouver.
The victim has been identified as Megan Peterkin, 38, a resident of Vancouver. She was found deceased inside the three-story apartment complex located on East 5th Street, where the fire broke out.
Fire Response and Fatal Outcome
Firefighters responded to the scene in the early hours of May 2, prompting a second-alarm response due to the intensity of the blaze. Crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control within approximately 30 minutes. Despite their efforts, Peterkin was found dead inside the building during the emergency response.
Cause of Death: Smoke and Thermal Injuries
The medical examiner’s report, released Thursday (July 31), confirmed that Peterkin died as a result of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries sustained in the fire. Her death was officially ruled accidental.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, the apartment fire displaced 20 residents, many of whom lost their homes and belongings. Local agencies and the Red Cross assisted those affected by the blaze in the days following the incident.
