Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run While Biking on Annapolis Road; Driver Tracked Down Hours Later

NEW CARROLLTON, Md. – A tragic hit-and-run incident in Prince George’s County has left a community mourning the loss of a local woman and authorities continuing their investigation into the events that led to her untimely death.

The victim has been identified as 55-year-old Tara Carter of Lanham, Maryland, who was struck and fatally injured while biking along Annapolis Road on the evening of July 17, 2025.

Bicyclist Fatally Struck, Driver Flees the Scene

According to the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, officers from the City of New Carrollton Police Department responded to a report of a collision involving a bicyclist around 7:55 p.m. in the 8400 block of Annapolis Road.

Upon arrival, officers found Carter critically injured. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities stated that the driver involved in the collision did not remain at the scene, prompting an immediate hit-and-run investigation. However, thanks to the quick action of a witness and surveillance video from nearby cameras, New Carrollton Police were able to identify and locate the driver within hours of the incident.

Details of the Collision

Preliminary findings suggest that the driver was traveling eastbound on Annapolis Road when they struck the victim, who was riding her bicycle. The exact circumstances of the collision — including the driver’s speed, Carter’s position in the roadway, lighting conditions, and potential distractions — are all under active investigation by the Prince George’s County Police Department.

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit (CARU) has taken over the case, as it does for all fatal collisions within the city of New Carrollton.
