Wishes In Flight Grants Leukemia Survivor’s Dream Trip to Hawaii

RENTON, Wash. – For 10-year-old Maia, few things bring more joy than running across a soccer field with her family and friends. But just two years ago, the simple act of playing became unexpectedly painful.

A Mysterious Illness

Maia began experiencing persistent aches that shifted from her legs to her arms.

“[I] would have pain in the leg and in the arm,” Maia recalled. “The pain just kept switching and you’re like, ‘Oh, this hurts. It hurts a lot.’”

Doctors struggled to find the cause, but after numerous visits, Maia was referred to Seattle Children’s Hospital, where she finally received a diagnosis: leukemia.

“I didn’t know what to do because you can’t do anything,” she said, describing the shock of hearing the news.

Treatment and a Growing Dream

Her treatment meant long hospital stays and difficult days. During those months, Maia began thinking about what she wanted to do when she got better.

She dreamed of visiting Hawaii — a warm, sunny place where she could swim, explore, and see dolphins.

“We hadn’t had a family vacation or anything,” Maia said. “We liked going camping but we couldn’t, and I love swimming. There’s warm water over there and to see the dolphins.”

When Maia’s mother, Paola, learned about Make-A-Wish and its Wishes In Flight program, they began planning the perfect family getaway.

A Hawaiian Escape

Maia’s wish soon came true. She and her family traveled to Oahu, Hawaii, where they swam with dolphins, tried surfing, and enjoyed tropical treats.

“It was like a relief because then I’m far from home and far from the hospital. Like, five hours in the plane,” Maia said.

The trip gave the family a rare chance to relax, reconnect, and celebrate Maia’s recovery milestones.

Back on the Field

Today, Maia’s health has greatly improved. She still visits the hospital once a month for blood checks, but she’s back to doing what she loves — playing soccer.

Her Hawaiian adventure is now a treasured memory, a reminder of how far she’s come and of the generosity that made it possible.

Make-A-Wish’s Wishes In Flight program relies on donated airline miles to send children with critical illnesses — like Maia — on dream trips with their families. Supporters can contribute to ensure more kids experience the same joy and relief Maia felt on her journey.
