Victim Identified in Deadly Southeast Portland Standoff

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) – Police have identified the woman killed during a tense standoff in Southeast Portland on Sunday evening as 21-year-old Kimberly Venegas-Gonzalez of Portland.

The incident began around 6:30 p.m. when officers responded to a welfare check at a home near Southeast 170th Avenue and Southeast Division Street. According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), a man called 911 to report that a woman was dead inside the residence.

When officers arrived, they discovered a man barricaded inside and “likely armed.” Out of caution, PPB requested assistance from tactical teams and crisis negotiators to try and resolve the situation safely.

Tactical Response and Discovery

Shortly after arriving, tactical officers breached the home’s front door. Inside, they found the body of Venegas-Gonzalez, who had died from a gunshot wound, according to the medical examiner’s office. Her body was removed from the scene while the man remained barricaded inside.

For nearly two hours, negotiators attempted to persuade the suspect to surrender. Shortly before 9 p.m., the man exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident. Officers also recovered a firearm from the residence.

The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Leonel Macias of Portland. After being transported to a hospital for medical evaluation, Macias was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon.
