HARRISON, N.J. — Authorities have identified the two teenagers from Maryland who lost their lives in a tragic single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on the New Jersey Turnpike in Gloucester County.
According to the New Jersey State Police, Juan Carlos Munguia-Palma, 19, and an unnamed 14-year-old boy, both from Hyattsville, Maryland, were killed in the crash, which occurred around 1:05 a.m. near milepost 13.6, approximately three-quarters of a mile north of Exit 2 in Harrison Township.
The Crash Details
State Police report that the SUV, driven by a 19-year-old man also from Hyattsville, was heading north when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV veered off the road, slid down an embankment on the right side, and collided with a tree.
There were six people in the SUV at the time of the crash. Four of them — including Munguia-Palma and the 14-year-old — were ejected from the vehicle due to the force of the impact. The tragic incident claimed the lives of both teens at the scene.
Injuries and Current Conditions
The driver and two other passengers were seriously injured in the crash and remain in stable condition as of Wednesday, according to officials. One additional 19-year-old passenger suffered moderate injuries.
All injured individuals were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released the names of the surviving passengers.
Investigation Ongoing
As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the crash. The cause remains under active investigation by the New Jersey State Police.
It has not yet been determined whether factors such as speed, road conditions, or impairment played a role in the incident.
