SOUTHEAST, N.Y. – Three individuals have been arrested in connection with a shoplifting incident at businesses located on Independent Way, following a coordinated effort by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 30 around 5 p.m., deputies were notified that a vehicle wanted in connection with felonies in New Jersey had been spotted in the area of I-84 and Route 312.
Responding officers quickly located the vehicle in a nearby parking lot, where they observed the occupants exiting a store carrying numerous items. The merchandise was later confirmed as stolen.
Suspects Identified and Arrested
The following individuals were taken into custody:

Latifah R. Smith, 35, of Carmel

Shatoya Smith, 28, of Newburgh

Carlan Newby, 25, of Beacon
All three suspects were charged with:

Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree (Felony)

Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree (Felony)

Criminal Possession of an Anti-Security Item (Misdemeanor)
In addition, both Latifah Smith and Shatoya Smith were charged as Fugitives from Justice, as they are wanted on felony warrants from the Paramus Police Department in New Jersey.
Held Without Bail Due to Criminal History
Following arraignment in the Town of Southeast Court, all three were remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility, due to their prior felony convictions and outstanding warrants.
Sheriff Kevin J. McConville praised the coordinated response of deputies and investigators in safely apprehending the suspects.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out additional charges.
