Texas Mom Accused of Smuggling Drugs into Violent New York Prison Using a Child

BEEKMAN, NY – A 24-year-old Texas woman is facing criminal charges after allegedly smuggling drugs into one of New York’s most notorious prisons—with the help of a child.

New York State Police announced this week the arrest of Christina C. Miranda, of Weslaco, Texas, following an incident that occurred during a weekend visit to Greenhaven Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison located in Dutchess County’s Town of Beekman.

Contraband Smuggled into Greenhaven

On Saturday, May 24, a New York State Trooper from the Poughkeepsie barracks was called to Greenhaven Correctional Facility after officials reported a visitor attempting to introduce contraband into the facility. Correctional staff became suspicious during routine procedures and initiated an investigation.

According to authorities, Miranda had brought approximately 63 grams of marijuana into the prison. What shocked investigators, however, was how she attempted to conceal it — allegedly hiding the drugs on a child’s back.

Serious Charges Filed

Following the discovery, Miranda was taken into custody and later charged with:

  • Promoting Prison Contraband in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor

  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a serious charge that reflects the alleged use of a minor in the commission of the crime

Released with Court Date

Despite the nature of the allegations, Miranda was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Beekman Town Court in June to respond to the charges. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her visit and potential further involvement is ongoing.

A Notorious Correctional Facility

The Greenhaven Correctional Facility is no stranger to controversy. Known as one of New York’s most violent state prisons, Greenhaven houses some of the state’s most dangerous offenders. It is frequently cited for high levels of inmate violence and incidents involving contraband smuggling, despite its high-security classification.

While Greenhaven may not top the list as the most violent prison in New York, it consistently ranks among the top tier of high-risk facilities, drawing attention from prison reform advocates, law enforcement, and the public alike.

A Troubling Trend

Authorities have expressed increasing concern over the rising number of contraband cases involving prison visitors, particularly when children are used in the process. This case highlights what officials describe as a disturbing misuse of minors, not only exposing them to dangerous environments but also involving them in criminal activities that can have lifelong consequences.

The case serves as a reminder of the serious legal and ethical consequences associated with attempting to smuggle contraband into secure facilities—especially when involving children. Authorities continue to urge visitors to comply with all correctional regulations and emphasize that enhanced security measures remain in place at Greenhaven and similar institutions across the state.
