WASHINGTON, D.C. — A teenage girl is recovering after walking herself into a hospital Saturday evening with gunshot wounds, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), officers were called to a local hospital at approximately 8:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a walk-in gunshot victim. Upon arrival, hospital staff confirmed that the patient was a teenage girl who had entered the facility on her own, seeking treatment for her injuries.
Shooting Location Identified
Following initial questioning and a brief investigation, authorities determined that the teen had been shot in the 1100 block of 3rd Street, Southwest, an area that falls under the jurisdiction of the D.C. Housing Authority Police Department (DCHAPD).
The case has since been transferred to DCHAPD, which is now leading the investigation into what led to the shooting and who may be responsible. At this point, no arrests have been made, and no suspect information has been released.
Identity and Condition Unknown
Police have not released the identity of the teen due to her age and the ongoing nature of the investigation. Her current medical condition remains undisclosed as of Sunday morning.
Authorities did not clarify whether the teen was the intended target of the shooting or caught in crossfire, and investigators are working to determine the motive and any potential suspects involved.
No Link to Navy Yard Incidents
In recent days, the Navy Yard neighborhood has seen a spike in large groups of teens gathering and causing public disturbances, with a separate violent incident involving a large crowd occurring just hours before the shooting was reported.
However, MPD confirmed that this shooting is not connected to the earlier unrest in Navy Yard. The incidents appear to be isolated, despite their proximity in both time and location.
Ongoing Investigation
As detectives continue to investigate, they are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Surveillance footage from nearby buildings, public cameras, and witness statements will play a key role in reconstructing the events leading up to the girl’s injury.
The Metropolitan Police Department and D.C. Housing Authority Police have asked that anyone with tips or relevant information call (202) 727-9099 or submit anonymous messages to MPD’s text tip line at 50411.
Community Concerns Rising
This latest incident adds to growing concern about youth safety and gun violence in the city, particularly in areas like Southwest D.C. where dense housing and public spaces see high foot traffic.
While police and city leaders continue to work on long-term strategies to reduce youth crime and violence, Saturday’s shooting underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and the community alike.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
