Search for Missing Poughquag Resident Ends in Tragedy in Dutchess County

A community in the Hudson Valley is grieving following the discovery of a missing 44-year-old from Poughquag, New York. What began as a midnight search through the woods of Dutchess County ended in heartbreak, as the individual was found deceased early the next morning.

Emergency Search Launched Overnight

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Ray Brook Dispatch received a request from the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office to aid in the search for a missing person. The missing individual, whose name and gender have not been disclosed, was last known to be in the Depot Hill Multiple Use Area in the Town of Beekman.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers, including Rangers Pries and Rusher, responded quickly. The team located the missing person’s vehicle in the north parking lot of the preserve, prompting an urgent ground search that continued through the night.

Appalachian Trail Campers Interviewed

Search teams focused efforts on the Morgan Stewart Shelter, a known rest stop on the Appalachian Trail. Rangers interviewed hikers and campers in the area, hoping someone had seen or spoken with the missing 44-year-old. Despite extensive overnight efforts, there was no sign of the individual until daylight.

Body Discovered the Next Morning

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the search came to a tragic conclusion when forest rangers discovered the body of the missing person. A coordinated recovery operation was conducted, and the individual was respectfully carried from the forest and turned over to the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The cause of death has not been disclosed, and authorities have not confirmed whether foul play is suspected. However, the New York State DEC used the opportunity to raise awareness about mental health resources, hinting that the case may involve a suicide.

Mental Health Resources Highlighted

In the wake of this tragedy, the DEC issued a strong message encouraging anyone struggling with mental health issues to seek immediate help.

“If you or someone you know needs mental health assistance, help is available,” the DEC stated. “988 is a free 24-hour hotline to call or text anywhere in New York. You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK.”

These resources offer free, confidential support for individuals in crisis, their loved ones, and anyone feeling overwhelmed.
