NEWBURGH, NY – A large structure fire broke out at 187 Broadway in the City of Newburgh around 1 p.m. on Saturday, causing significant damage to a multi-story residence and prompting a multi-agency emergency response.
Fire Spreads Quickly
According to officials, the blaze began in a second-floor apartment and spread rapidly, filling the second and third floors with thick smoke and flames. The fire quickly escalated to multiple alarms, bringing in mutual aid from several surrounding departments.
Among those assisting on the scene were companies from the Stewart Air Guard, West Point, New Windsor, Castle Point, Beacon, Cronomer Valley, and Cornwall-on-Hudson.
Residents and Firefighters Impacted
Authorities reported that seven people were living in the second-floor apartment where the fire is believed to have started. All residents were able to evacuate, though details about property loss or displacement have not yet been released.
During firefighting efforts, five firefighters sustained minor injuries. They were transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment. Emergency medical crews from New Windsor and Empress EMS also provided support on site.
First responders at the scene confirmed that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Cause Under Investigation
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities. Fire officials have not yet released a timeline for when the building might be deemed safe for inspection or reentry.
