Sacramento Man Arrested in Portland on Homicide Warrant

Sacramento Man Arrested in Portland on Homicide Warrant

PORTLAND, Ore. – A Sacramento man wanted in connection with a July 18 homicide in North Sacramento has been arrested in Portland following a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement.

Police have identified the suspect as 59-year-old Dieshal Battles. He was taken into custody Thursday with assistance from the FBI and Portland Police Bureau and is awaiting extradition to California, where he will be booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Details of the July 18 Incident

Sacramento police say officers responded just after 9:45 p.m. on July 18 to the 1700 block of South Avenue for a report of an assault. Upon arrival, they found an unconscious adult male who was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were called in that night to canvass the area, collect evidence, and interview witnesses. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name once family members have been notified.

Multi-Agency Search and Arrest

In an update after Thursday’s arrest, Sacramento police described a “comprehensive investigation” that led them to locate Battles in Portland. Working with the FBI and Portland Police, officers executed the arrest without incident.

Battles is wanted on a homicide warrant tied to the South Avenue case. Once returned to Sacramento, he will be held at the Main Jail, which houses detainees from across the region awaiting court proceedings, including those extradited from other states.

The Extradition Process

Because the arrest happened in Oregon, Battles’s transfer to California will follow the Uniform Criminal Extradition Act. Under Oregon law, the governor must honor another state’s lawful request to return a fugitive, with procedures outlined in the Oregon Revised Statutes.

In California, extraditions proceed under Penal Code 1551.1 and related fugitive statutes. Once Battles arrives in Sacramento, prosecutors will review the evidence and determine formal charges.

Homicide Trends and Other Arrests

The South Avenue case is one of several recent homicide investigations in Sacramento that have led to quick arrests. On July 25, police announced they had captured a suspect after a pursuit in connection with a separate killing near West El Camino Avenue.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the city recorded 38 homicides in 2023, down from 54 in 2022, though officials note that year-to-year numbers often fluctuate.
