BOWIE, Md. — A casual lottery player from Prince George’s County is celebrating a massive win after taking a chance on the Maryland Lottery’s Racetrax game for the very first time—and walking away with a staggering $61,155.30.
The lucky player made his bet on July 3 at the 7-Eleven located at 15700 Mount Oak Road in Bowie. Choosing a 10-cent superfecta box, he selected four long-shot horses—numbers 9, 10, 11, and 12. In Racetrax, a superfecta box pays out when all four horses finish in the top four spots, in any order. And that’s exactly what happened.
The horses finished in a thrilling 9, 12, 10, and 11 order, turning the modest wager into a life-changing payout due to the long odds and high risk associated with the bet type.
“Beginner’s Luck” Pays Big
“I never dreamed I’d be that one,” the winner said after claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on July 16. His initial reaction was shock, quickly followed by joy—though he admitted his wife didn’t believe him at first. That changed once she saw the winning ticket, and the disbelief turned into celebration.
“She gave me a hug,” he said with a smile.
Plans for the Winnings
The couple, who usually play bigger jackpot games like Powerball and Mega Millions only when the prizes skyrocket, hadn’t considered Racetrax before. Now, with more than $61,000 in hand, they’re already thinking about how to put the money to good use.
At the top of the list? A backyard play set for their grandchildren.
Will He Play Again?
When asked if he plans to play Racetrax again, the man didn’t hesitate:
“Yes, without a doubt.”
His experience is a reminder of how unpredictable—and rewarding—lottery games can be, especially for those trying them out for the first time.
