Police Seek Suspect in Wallet Theft and Fraud Case at Silver Spring Safeway

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Montgomery County Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man suspected of stealing a Safeway employee’s wallet and using the stolen credit card to make purchases at nearby businesses.

The incident happened on Sunday, June 22, 2025, around 11:15 a.m. at the Safeway store located at 909 Thayer Avenue. According to investigators, the suspect entered an employee area and took the wallet from a closet before leaving the store.

Police say the suspect then used the victim’s credit card to complete transactions at three locations in close proximity to the Safeway.

Suspect Description

The suspect is described as:

  • Black male, approximately in his 40s or 50s

  • Slight build

  • Salt-and-pepper goatee

  • Wearing a black Washington Nationals hat, white t-shirt, and carrying a black backpack

Tipsters may remain anonymous, and information leading to an arrest could result in a reward between $250 and $10,000.
