Police Seek Public Help Identifying Suspect in Wappingers Falls Supermarket Theft

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. — New York State Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man suspected of stealing groceries from a Hannaford supermarket in Wappingers Falls earlier this month. The case, which authorities say has gone cold, has prompted police to release surveillance photos and turn to social media in hopes of locating the individual responsible.

Incident Occurred at Busy Hannaford Location on Route 9

The alleged incident occurred on Tuesday, April 16, around 6:00 p.m., at the Hannaford Supermarket located along the heavily traveled Route 9 corridor in Dutchess County.

Troopers from the New York State Police Wappingers barracks were dispatched to the store following a call from store staff, reporting a man had walked out without paying for merchandise. According to eyewitnesses and video footage, the suspect was seen pushing a cart filled with two full bags of groceries and a case of bottled water as he exited the store without stopping at the checkout.

Surveillance Photos Released

In an effort to generate new leads, police released surveillance images of the suspect captured from the store’s security system. The man appears to be in his late 20s to mid-30s, with a full beard and mustache. At the time of the incident, he was wearing dark-colored clothing, including a hat and a hood, possibly in an attempt to partially obscure his identity.

Though the quality of the images is not crystal clear, police hope someone in the community may recognize the individual based on facial features, body language, or clothing style.

Suspect Fled in White Hyundai, Police Say

By the time troopers arrived at the scene, the man had already fled. Witnesses told investigators that the suspect left the parking lot in a white Hyundai, though no license plate number was recorded. It’s unclear if the vehicle was waiting for him or if he was driving alone.

Despite interviewing witnesses and reviewing store surveillance, police say the investigation has since stalled, leading authorities to reach out to the public for assistance.

Community Asked to Assist in Identifying Suspect

Authorities are urging anyone who may have seen the suspect that day, recognize him from the released images, or has any relevant information to come forward. Even a small detail—such as recognition of the car, a conversation overheard, or knowledge of someone matching the description—could help bring the investigation back to life.

Those with tips are encouraged to call the New York State Police at (845) 677-7300, and reference case number NY2500337631. All calls can be kept confidential.

Why These Cases Matter

While some may see a grocery store theft as a minor crime, authorities emphasize that retail theft adds up, not only for the businesses involved but for the community as a whole. Repeat offenses, organized shoplifting, and unsolved cases can contribute to rising costs for consumers, decreased security, and diminished confidence in local public safety.

Police say that reporting and resolving retail theft cases helps prevent larger patterns of criminal behavior and sends a message that such actions will be taken seriously.

Local Residents React to the Incident

The community has responded with concern. “We shop at that Hannaford every week,” said a Wappingers Falls resident. “It’s unsettling to hear about someone just walking out with a cart full of stuff—especially during a busy time when families are around.”

Others expressed frustration at the broader trend of retail theft in the region and called for increased security at high-traffic locations like grocery stores and shopping centers.
