Ongoing Investigation at The Derby Draws Community Attention
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – A large police presence at a popular downtown bar on Saturday morning stirred widespread curiosity and speculation among local residents. Around 10 a.m., City of Poughkeepsie police officers and detectives executed a search warrant at The Derby, located at 96 Main Street.
According to witnesses, officers from both the detective and patrol divisions arrived in multiple marked vehicles, positioning themselves along South Clover and Main Streets. Their arrival drew immediate attention from pedestrians and business owners in the area. At the time, the only person inside the bar was a cleaning worker, who appeared surprised by the sudden law enforcement activity.
One of the owners of The Derby was reached by phone shortly after the police entered the premises. Speaking from home, the owner expressed confusion over the situation, stating he had no prior knowledge of the warrant or the reason for the police visit. He abruptly ended the conversation, saying he was heading back to the bar, which he had left just a few hours earlier.
Community Speculation Grows
The unusual morning search prompted various theories from community members. A passerby speculated that the search may be linked to a shooting that occurred in June on nearby South Clover Street. Another resident offered a different theory, suggesting that the investigation could involve a stolen e-bike.
While speculation continued to circulate, official details remained limited. Detective Lieutenant Sean McCarthy of the Poughkeepsie Police Department confirmed that the operation was part of an ongoing investigation but declined to share specifics, citing the active nature of the case.
Bar Owner Requests Legal Representation
Later in the day, Mid-Hudson News reporters spoke briefly with the bar’s owner outside the establishment. The owner stated that he had met with detectives, who provided no additional information about the investigation. He also indicated that future comments regarding the situation would be handled through the business’s legal counsel.
No Arrests Made Yet
Officers remained at The Derby for more than two hours on Saturday, thoroughly searching the premises. By Saturday evening, Detective Lieutenant McCarthy reiterated that no arrests had been made in connection with the search and confirmed the investigation was still ongoing.
As of now, no charges have been filed, and authorities have not disclosed the nature of the case. The presence of law enforcement at a well-known local bar has left many in the community with more questions than answers.
