Police Investigate Slashings Involving Teen at Poughkeepsie Housing Complex

POUGHKEEPSIE – City police are actively investigating a violent incident that left three individuals, including a 13-year-old, with slash wounds following a large altercation at the Rip Van Winkle Apartments—commonly known as “The Rip”—on Saturday night.

The incident occurred around 9:49 p.m. at the housing complex located at the intersection of Main Street and Rinaldi Boulevard. According to police reports, City 911 received multiple calls reporting a large fight involving several people. When officers arrived on the scene, the crowd had already dispersed, and no victims were immediately located.

However, not long after the scene had cleared, local authorities were contacted by a nearby hospital’s emergency department. Medical staff informed police that three individuals had arrived at the hospital with injuries consistent with being slashed. Among the wounded was a 13-year-old child. Officers responded to the hospital to investigate further.

Upon interviewing the victims, police determined that all three had sustained their injuries during the earlier altercation at the Rip Van Winkle Apartments. Fortunately, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Medical professionals expect all victims to make full recoveries.

At this time, police have not released the identities of the victims or any potential suspects involved in the fight. The motive behind the violence remains unclear, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether any weapons were recovered at the scene.

The incident has raised renewed concerns about public safety in and around the Rip Van Winkle Apartments, an area that has previously experienced sporadic reports of violence. Community members have expressed concern about the presence of minors in such dangerous situations.

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department has launched an investigation and is urging anyone with information related to the altercation to come forward. Tips can be shared confidentially through the department’s TIP LINE by calling 845-451-7577.

Authorities are hoping that witnesses or individuals with video footage from Saturday night may be able to assist in piecing together what led to the altercation and identifying those responsible.

Police are continuing to monitor the area and say that increased patrols may be implemented in the coming days as a precaution.

As the investigation continues, city officials are calling on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
