FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Detectives have identified a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this week at a Federal Way apartment complex and are asking for the public’s assistance in locating him.
The Shooting
On Monday, August 18, at about 7:30 a.m., officers with the Federal Way Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at the Shores Apartments on 3rd Place Southwest.
When police arrived, they discovered a 43-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite efforts by first responders to save his life, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
Suspect Identified
By midweek, investigators announced that they had identified Matthew Krutenat as the suspect in the case. Police released two photos of Krutenat on Wednesday, saying they believe he is responsible for the fatal shooting.
Authorities warned that Krutenat may be armed and urged the public not to approach him if spotted.
Public’s Role in the Search
Federal Way Police are calling on anyone with information about Krutenat’s whereabouts to come forward. Tips can be reported to the department’s non-emergency line at 253-835-2121.
Officials stressed that community assistance is often critical in homicide investigations, particularly in the early stages when suspects may still be in the area.
Community Impact
Residents of the Shores Apartments described the incident as frightening, with many rattled by the sound of gunfire early in the morning. “It’s really unsettling to know this happened so close to where we live,” one resident said.
The complex, like other large apartment communities in the region, has seen periodic police activity, but neighbors said Monday’s fatal shooting was among the most serious incidents in recent memory.
Ongoing Investigation
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting, including the possible relationship between Krutenat and the victim. Officials have not released information on a motive.
