Pierce County, WA — County Executive Ryan Mello is publicly expressing concern over recent comments and social media posts made by Pierce County Sheriff Keith Swank, saying they are a distraction from real public safety issues and could undermine community trust in law enforcement.
Sheriff Advises Drivers to Decline Sobriety Tests
The controversy began after Sheriff Swank appeared on The Gee and Ursula Show on KIRO Newsradio earlier this month. During the interview, Swank suggested that drivers should refuse to take field sobriety tests if pulled over for suspected DUI.
“I was stunned,” said Executive Mello in response. “The fact that the top law enforcement officer in Pierce County is making that kind of public recommendation does not make our community safer.”
Field sobriety tests are often a key step for law enforcement in identifying impaired drivers. Mello expressed concern that such advice, coming from someone in Swank’s position, could encourage dangerous behavior and erode confidence in the justice system.
Sheriff Swank Stands By His Remarks
Despite backlash, Sheriff Swank has not retracted his statement. In fact, he has doubled down on previous comments, both in interviews and on social media. This has raised further concerns from local officials and community members.
Disagreements on Immigration Enforcement
The rift between the two elected officials doesn’t end there. Sheriff Swank has also publicly stated his intention to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in deportation efforts—despite state law prohibiting such collaboration.
Under Washington’s Keep Washington Working Act of 2019, local law enforcement is restricted from engaging in federal immigration enforcement activities. This law was designed to protect immigrant communities and maintain trust in local policing.
Mello emphasized that Swank’s proposed actions would be out of bounds. “The prosecutor and I, along with other officials, are trying to help him understand the limits of his role. His job is not to enforce federal immigration laws,” Mello said.
Focus Needed on Real Safety Issues
Beyond the specific statements, Mello criticized Swank’s general approach to public communication, citing a pattern of controversial and distracting behavior on social media.
“There are a lot of questionable things that come from the sheriff’s Twitter account and out of his mouth,” Mello said. “I really hope we can move past this and stay focused on keeping this community safe.”
A Call for Responsible Leadership
As crime, homelessness, and public health remain pressing concerns across Pierce County, Mello underscored the need for responsible leadership and clear communication.
He warned that divisive comments and legally questionable actions detract from the broader mission of law enforcement. “We don’t have time for distractions. We need all leaders focused on real solutions,” he said.
The exchange highlights growing tension between elected leaders in Pierce County, raising questions about how law enforcement should engage with the public — and how much influence rhetoric has over safety and trust in the community.
