PGPD Officer Faces Grueling Recovery After Drunk Driver Crash on Route 210

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. — Two months after a devastating accident on Indian Head Highway, Officer Daniel Rodriguez of the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) remains on a long road to recovery. Struck by a suspected drunk driver while responding to a separate crash, Rodriguez continues to battle through serious, life-altering injuries.

Tragedy Strikes on Duty

On the morning of April 18, 2025, Officer Rodriguez was performing his duty with the utmost care. He had activated his cruiser’s emergency lights and was placing flares near Swan Creek Road to secure the scene of an earlier crash when tragedy struck. A vehicle, operated by a driver later found to be intoxicated, slammed into Rodriguez’s police cruiser with such force that it hurled the vehicle into him, pinning him against a guardrail.

The crash left Rodriguez with a broken back, a fractured wrist and hand, and traumatic head injuries. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and has since undergone multiple surgeries and intense therapy.

Driver’s BAC Twice the Legal Limit

Authorities confirmed that the driver who caused the crash had a blood alcohol content (BAC) more than double the legal limit. Despite the serious injuries caused, the suspect was cited and released, sparking outrage among community members and fellow officers.

“This wasn’t just a mistake — it was a reckless, preventable act,” said PGPD spokesperson Lt. Melissa Holden. “Officer Rodriguez put his life on the line to protect others, and now he needs the community to protect and support him.”

A Community Rallies for One of Its Own

In the wake of the incident, an outpouring of support has emerged. The Fraternal Order of Prince George’s County Police, Lodge 89, has launched a donation campaign to help cover Officer Rodriguez’s mounting medical expenses and support his family during this trying time.

“This is one of those moments when a guardian of the community needs the community to stand behind him,” said Anne Arundel County Sheriff Everett L. Sesker in a heartfelt statement. “Officer Rodriguez and his family need our strength, support, and prayers.”

The campaign is aimed at alleviating the financial burdens that accompany long-term recovery, including medical equipment, home adjustments, and ongoing care.

Important: Donors are requested to include “4380” in the notes section to ensure their contributions are directed appropriately.

Even small contributions can make a significant difference, organizers say. Community members are also encouraged to spread awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of supporting first responders.

An Urgent Reminder

Officer Rodriguez’s story is not just one of personal tragedy — it’s a sobering reminder of the risks officers take each day and the devastating consequences of impaired driving.

“This could have been avoided,” said Officer Angela Taylor, a longtime colleague of Rodriguez. “One person’s irresponsible decision has forever changed a life. We must do better — for Daniel, and for everyone who risks everything to keep us safe.”

As Rodriguez begins the long process of healing, the hope is that the community will continue to stand with him — not only through donations but through greater awareness, action, and care.
