Orange County Legislature Pushes for Return of Newburgh-Beacon Ferry

GOSHEN, N.Y. – The Orange County Legislature has formally called for the return of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service, which was recently discontinued by Metro-North Railroad. The service, which provided a vital Hudson River crossing for commuters traveling to and from New York City, ended last month despite strong opposition from local officials and residents.

Ferry Service Discontinued

The Newburgh-Beacon Ferry offered a direct route for west-of-Hudson commuters to connect with Metro-North trains on the east side of the river. However, Metro-North shut down the service citing low ridership and alternative transportation options.

According to Metro-North officials, the ferry averaged just 62 daily riders, a number they argue did not justify continued operations. They noted that many commuters already rely on bus shuttles or the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to make the crossing.

Legislators Voice Frustration

County Legislator Genesis Ramos expressed disappointment over the decision, noting that her direct conversations with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) indicate no plans to reinstate the ferry.

“I have been in communication with MTA directly, and from the conversations that I have had, it doesn’t seem like they are planning to bring the ferry service back,” Ramos said. “They are instead looking to expand the shuttle services. I think both are necessary – bring back the ferry service and expand the bus shuttle service.”

Legislator Kevindaryn Lujan was more critical, accusing the MTA of steadily reducing service while raising fares, leaving Hudson Valley residents with fewer options and higher costs.

Importance of the Ferry

Supporters argue that the ferry provided not only a convenient option for commuters but also helped reduce congestion on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and surrounding roadways. Additionally, ferry travel offered a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to driving.

Many believe that while ridership was relatively low, the service still played an important role in the region’s transit network and could see higher usage if marketed more effectively or paired with expanded schedules.

Future of Commuter Options

Metro-North has signaled its intent to focus on expanding shuttle bus services as a replacement. While this may meet the needs of some commuters, county officials say eliminating the ferry entirely limits choice and weakens the long-term transportation infrastructure in the Hudson Valley.

Local leaders are continuing to push for dialogue with the MTA, hoping to find a compromise that would restore the ferry while also improving bus connections.

Conclusion

For now, the fate of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry remains uncertain. While the Orange County Legislature is united in its call for the service’s return, Metro-North appears committed to moving forward without it. Residents and officials alike fear that without strong advocacy, another key transportation option across the Hudson may be lost for good.
