Off-Duty Newburgh Detective Injured in Knife Attack at Private Party

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – An off-duty Newburgh city police detective was injured early Sunday morning when a confrontation at a private party escalated into violence involving two teens, one of whom pulled a knife.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. during a Quinceañera celebration being held at a local venue. According to police, two uninvited teenagers — ages 19 and 17 — crashed the event and attempted to steal alcohol.

When venue staff confronted the intruders and asked them to leave, the situation turned hostile. The off-duty detective, who was attending the party as a guest, stepped in to help de-escalate the confrontation.

At that point, one of the teens pulled out a knife and slashed the detective, causing what authorities described as “superficial lacerations.” The injuries, while not life-threatening, highlight the unpredictable dangers officers can face, even while off-duty.

Suspects in Custody

Both teens were taken into custody and are now facing felony robbery charges. Their names have not been released due to the ongoing investigation and the age of the younger suspect.

Authorities have not confirmed whether additional charges may follow, pending further review of the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

The Newburgh City Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation. Detectives are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Newburgh City Police detectives at (845) 569-7519.

Despite the injury, the detective involved is expected to make a full recovery. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a celebration can turn dangerous when outsiders choose violence.
