OXON HILL, Md. — Four police officers involved in the fatal pursuit of a carjacking suspect in February have been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, according to a report released by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.
The incident unfolded in Prince George’s County, beginning in a parking lot off Oxon Hill Road, where officers located a vehicle that had been reported stolen earlier that day.
Suspect Refuses to Surrender
The vehicle was soon approached by 23-year-old Aniyah Redd, who got behind the wheel. As police attempted to apprehend her, Redd fled the scene, triggering a pursuit.
Her attempt to escape ended when she crashed the car into a ditch, flipping the vehicle over. But instead of surrendering, Redd climbed a fence and ran onto the busy lanes of Interstate 495, where tragedy struck.
Struck and Dragged by Two Vehicles
As Redd ran across the interstate, she was hit by an oncoming BMW traveling between 37 and 45 miles per hour, according to the Attorney General’s report. The impact sent her airborne, and she slid approximately 15 feet before coming to a stop.
Moments later, a Honda pickup truck unknowingly drove over her and dragged her body approximately 95 feet, the report noted.
No Criminal Conduct Found by Officers
The Attorney General’s Office concluded that the officers involved had acted lawfully and did not show “wanton and reckless disregard for human life.” The investigation found that Redd’s death was not the result of any direct police action, but rather a tragic consequence of her attempt to flee and cross a busy highway.
“There is no evidence to indicate that the subject officers’ conduct demonstrated a wanton and reckless disregard for human life,” the report stated.
Broader Context and Community Reaction
While no charges will be filed, the case has added to ongoing debates surrounding police pursuits and public safety. Advocates have expressed concerns about the risks associated with high-speed chases, particularly in populated urban areas. However, the Attorney General’s findings reaffirm that officers followed protocol and attempted to make a safe arrest.
Redd’s death has nevertheless left family members and community members grieving and searching for answers. As of now, there has been no public statement from Redd’s family regarding the Attorney General’s decision.
Investigation Closed
With the report complete, the case is now considered closed. The officers involved will not face any disciplinary or legal consequences related to Redd’s death.
Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the original carjacking report or whether Redd was formally connected to other suspects.
This case serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers involved in fleeing from law enforcement—and the devastating outcomes that can result in mere seconds.
