WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is urging the public to help identify two individuals involved in an armed carjacking that took place in broad daylight in Northeast D.C. on Sunday, July 27.
Armed Carjacking at Busy Intersection
The incident occurred at approximately 12:57 p.m. at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road NE, a busy corridor near several retail and transit hubs. According to police, two suspects confronted a victim, with one of them brandishing a knife. They forcibly took the victim’s moped keys, and the second suspect fled the scene on the stolen moped while the first followed on foot.
MPD officials say the victim was not seriously injured during the encounter, but the use of a weapon and the brazenness of the act in broad daylight have intensified the department’s efforts to apprehend those responsible.
Surveillance Footage Released
In a bid to generate leads, the police department has released surveillance footage and images of the suspects captured near the scene of the crime. Authorities believe public assistance could be crucial in solving the case. However, they are strongly advising residents not to approach the suspects, as they are considered armed and dangerous.
$10,000 Reward Offered
To encourage cooperation from the community, the Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individuals involved in this violent crime.
“The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a violent crime committed in the District of Columbia,” said the department in an official statement.

A Larger Public Safety Concern
This call for assistance comes as D.C. continues to face growing concerns about violent crime, particularly incidents involving carjackings and armed robberies. City officials have been under increased pressure to crack down on repeat offenders and bolster neighborhood safety through both policing and community engagement strategies.
By involving the public and offering financial rewards, MPD hopes to strike a balance between public safety and civic responsibility. They stress that while individuals should avoid direct intervention, community awareness and vigilance remain powerful tools in deterring crime and aiding investigations.
As the investigation continues, residents are encouraged to remain cautious in high-traffic areas and report suspicious activity promptly.
