ALEXANDRIA, VA – Shoppers who missed Virginia’s sales tax holiday last weekend have another chance to score deals — just across the bridge. Maryland’s annual Tax-Free Week kicks off Saturday, August 10 and runs through Saturday, August 16, offering a week-long opportunity to save.
Popular destinations like Tanger Outlets National Harbor, just minutes from Alexandria via the Woodrow Wilson Bridge or a scenic water taxi from Old Town, are expected to draw crowds from the D.C. metro area. With dozens of retailers participating, bargain hunters and back-to-school shoppers will have ample time to take advantage of the discounts.
What’s Tax-Free?
During Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, the state’s 6% sales tax is waived on:
-
Clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item
-
First $40 spent on backpacks
There’s no limit on the number of qualifying items you can buy.
Why It Matters
Maryland Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman says the holiday is designed to help residents stretch their budgets:
“As costs continue to go up, shopping during the sales tax holiday is a great way to keep money in the pockets of hardworking shoppers and help their budgets go further. I encourage everyone to shop in Maryland during the sales tax holiday, save money where you can, and support the local businesses that keep the economy moving forward.”
The tax holiday, first established by state law in 2007, intentionally aligns with back-to-school season. Virginia’s similar event began in 2006 and traditionally runs the first weekend in August.
Boost for Local Businesses
According to Maryland Retailers Alliance President Cailey Locklair, the event is about more than just savings:
“Shop Tax Free Week is more than a 6% discount; it is an opportunity to support local businesses, and ease the financial burden on families preparing for the school year.”
Local retailers often see an uptick in sales during the week, as shoppers flock to stock up on essentials without the extra tax cost.
Plan Your Trip
Whether driving or taking the ferry, National Harbor offers a full day’s outing with shopping, dining, and waterfront attractions. The ferris wheel, waterfront restaurants, and outdoor entertainment make it easy to turn a shopping trip into a summer excursion.
