Maryland Man Charged With First-Degree Murder in Death of His Mother

BOWIE, Md. — A 40-year-old Maryland man is facing serious charges after police say he murdered his mother during a violent domestic dispute in Bowie over the weekend.

Authorities from the Bowie Police Department responded to a call around Sunday afternoon in the 12000 block of Blackwell Lane following reports of a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived, they encountered a chaotic and disturbing scene that quickly escalated into a homicide investigation.

Victim Found Dead Inside the Home

Upon arrival at the residence, officers discovered a woman outside the home who appeared to have been assaulted. She was conscious and suffering from what authorities described as non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Inside the home, police made a tragic discovery. Susan Calero, 72, was found unconscious and not breathing, showing signs of severe physical trauma. Despite efforts to assist, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspect Identified as Her Son

Investigators quickly identified James Calero, 40, as the primary suspect in the case. According to officials, he had fled the scene before officers arrived.

A regional search was launched, and a short time later, Anne Arundel County Police officers successfully located and arrested him. Calero was taken into custody without further incident.

Charges and Custody

James Calero has been formally charged with first-degree murder, assault, and additional related offenses. He remains in custody, and no bond information has been released as of now.

The Prince George’s County Police Department, which handles all homicide investigations in Bowie, has taken over the case. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive, and details about what led to the deadly altercation remain under investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement officials are continuing to gather evidence and conduct interviews with witnesses and neighbors. The relationship between the injured woman found outside and the deceased victim is not yet confirmed, but it is believed that both were connected to the suspect.

The case has shocked residents of the quiet residential community, with many expressing disbelief over the tragedy. Police have urged anyone with additional information related to the incident to contact Prince George’s County Police detectives as the investigation moves forward.

This remains an active and ongoing case, and more details are expected to be released in the coming days.
