A tense situation in Marlborough was peacefully resolved on the night of July 23 when a man armed with a shotgun was taken into custody without incident. Authorities say the individual, a convicted felon, now faces weapons charges following a standoff at a Prospect Street property.
Incident Reported at Prospect Street Residence
The Marlborough Police Department received a call at approximately 9:40 PM from a concerned family member reporting that a man, believed to be intoxicated, was inside a barn on the property and armed with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun.
Police quickly responded to the scene, where they established a secure perimeter around the barn while attempting to contact the subject.
Peaceful Surrender and Arrest
After a brief standoff, the man exited the barn unarmed and was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported, and law enforcement successfully de-escalated the potentially dangerous situation.
Following the arrest, the man was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree, a charge based on his status as a convicted felon, which prohibits him from possessing firearms under state law.
Search Warrant Reveals Additional Weapon
Officers executed a search warrant on the residence shortly after the arrest. During the search, authorities discovered a second rifle inside the home, further adding to the seriousness of the investigation.
Although the presence of the second firearm raises additional concerns, the man currently faces a single weapons charge.
Released Under Bail Reform Laws
The suspect was arraigned and released on his own recognizance, as the charge is not bail-eligible under current New York State bail reform laws. His court date has not yet been disclosed.
Multi-Agency Response
The Marlborough Police Department received assistance at the scene from the New York State Police, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, and the Town of Lloyd Police Department. Their joint efforts helped ensure a safe and controlled resolution to the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as authorities continue to review the case.
