Marist University Celebrates First Commencement Under New Name, Honoring 1,200 Graduates

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Under gray skies and light rain, Marist University—formerly Marist College—celebrated a major milestone on Saturday as it held its 79th Commencement Ceremony, the first since officially becoming a university. The event marked a historic day for the institution and the Class of 2025, which saw more than 1,200 graduates cross the stage to receive their diplomas.

Graduates from all seven of Marist’s academic schools were recognized during the ceremony, representing a diverse student body that hails from 33 U.S. states and 15 countries worldwide.

A Message of Unity in Divided Times

Delivering the keynote address was NBC News Political Correspondent Steve Kornacki, who was also awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree by the university. Kornacki, known for his deep involvement with Marist’s political science students and contributions to the Marist Poll, offered heartfelt and timely advice to graduates as they step into an increasingly divided world.

“There is so much in this world, the world you’re walking out into, that is just baiting you to look at others with contempt,” Kornacki said. “But when we get that urge, we can catch ourselves… What might they be seeing that I’m not? What might they be feeling that I’m not feeling? What could they be experiencing that I haven’t?”

Kornacki urged the graduating class to lead with empathy and curiosity in a time of political polarization and social unrest.

“This is a challenge for your generation amidst all the chaos and all the change,” he said. “You have the opportunity to show us the way, to show us how to preserve our common humanity.”

A Class Poised for Success

Despite ongoing challenges in the global job market and shifting landscapes in higher education, Marist University reported that 94 percent of the Class of 2025 are already employed or enrolled in graduate school. That figure underscores the institution’s ongoing commitment to preparing students for meaningful, real-world success.

The University, now boasting over 52,000 alumni worldwide, continues to grow its presence and reputation beyond the Hudson Valley. Its recent transition from Marist College to Marist University reflects an expanding academic portfolio, increased research opportunities, and broader global engagement.

Resilience and Pride Amid the Rain

The weather didn’t dampen the spirit of the day. Family members and friends filled the outdoor seating area, many cheering and waving from beneath umbrellas and rain jackets. Graduates grinned through the drizzle, their maroon caps and gowns creating a sea of unity against the overcast backdrop.

For many in attendance, the ceremony represented more than just a celebration of academic achievement—it was a testament to the resilience of a generation that faced high school disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic and adapted to a rapidly changing world during their college years.

Looking Forward

As Marist continues to evolve under its new designation as a university, Saturday’s commencement marked the beginning of a new era. The Class of 2025 will carry the distinction of being the first group of Marist University graduates, joining a growing network of alumni committed to leadership, innovation, and service.

With diplomas in hand and Kornacki’s message echoing in their minds, the graduates are stepping into the next chapter—ready to shape not just their futures, but the future of society at large.

“We are proud of this class not only for what they’ve accomplished, but for who they’ve become,” a university spokesperson said. “Today is the beginning of what we know will be a lifetime of success, service, and leadership.”
