Man with Knife Threatens Police During Poughkeepsie Standoff

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A tense standoff unfolded Sunday night on Wilson Boulevard as City of Poughkeepsie police dealt with a resident experiencing a mental health crisis.

The incident began shortly after 9 p.m. and lasted until approximately 10:30 p.m., when the man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. According to authorities, the man was armed with a knife and repeatedly attempted to stab officers positioned around his home.

Police advised nearby residents to remain indoors during the standoff, which took place on a normally quiet southside street near the Poughkeepsie Fire Department’s Hooker Avenue Station.

On multiple occasions, the man emerged from his residence with the knife in hand, telling police to “leave him alone.” Officers maintained a secure perimeter while attempting to de-escalate the situation.

Emergency medical personnel were staged at the Hooker Avenue firehouse, while the mental health crisis team coordinated with police at the intersection of Wilson Boulevard and Meyer Avenue. The crisis team moved in only once officers had gained control and were taking the man into custody.

During the standoff, Town of Poughkeepsie police and Dutchess County sheriff’s deputies responded to other calls within the city to ensure continued emergency coverage.

No injuries to officers, civilians, or the man in crisis were reported. The case remains under review.
