Loaded Handgun Discovered During Silver Spring Traffic Stop; Two Arrested

Silver Spring, MD – July 11, 2025

A routine traffic stop by Montgomery County Police in downtown Silver Spring on the evening of July 10 resulted in the arrest of two individuals after officers discovered a loaded handgun hidden under a car seat.

According to 3rd District Commander Jason Cokinos, the incident occurred in the 8000 block of Georgia Avenue, just north of the Washington, D.C. line. Commander Cokinos shared details of the arrest on Twitter/X, praising the efforts of the 3rd District evening shift patrol officers for their proactive policing.

“Downtown Silver Spring traffic stop leads to another gun arrest,” he wrote. “Last night (7/10/25), officers conducted a proactive stop… both occupants were acting nervous and suspicious.”


Suspicious Behavior Leads to Search

During the stop, officers observed that both the driver and the passenger appeared visibly nervous, prompting further investigation. As officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a partially hidden loaded handgun under the front seat.

Police then took swift action to safely detain both individuals. They were placed under arrest without incident and transported to central booking on charges related to the illegal possession of a firearm.


Community Safety and Ongoing Efforts

Commander Cokinos commended the officers involved for their alertness and commitment to keeping weapons off the streets.

This incident is part of an ongoing effort by Montgomery County Police to curb illegal gun possession and enhance safety in downtown areas, particularly near the D.C. border. The department has increased patrols and proactive stops in areas known for high foot traffic and vehicle activity.
