LAKE FOREST PARK, WA — A story of compassion and quick-thinking unfolded this week when a routine police patrol transformed into a powerful act of community kindness, ultimately providing help — and hope — for a homeless couple and their litter of puppies.
It all began when Officer Robles of the Lake Forest Park Police Department spotted an occupied vehicle parked in the lower mall parking lot. After conducting a welfare check, Robles learned the registered owner may have been a potential victim of domestic violence.
After further investigation, police determined no crime had occurred, but what emerged instead was a far more complex and heartbreaking reality.
Struggling in Silence
The couple, recently homeless and unemployed, were living out of their vehicle and doing their best to care for a litter of eight six-week-old Belgian German Shepherd puppies. The puppies had been born to their family dog, who had tragically been killed not long before. The grieving couple had tried to surrender the puppies to a rescue organization but were turned away due to long waitlists.
Desperate and out of options, they admitted they had resorted to stealing just to feed the dogs.
Rather than reprimand them, Officer Robles recognized the honesty and sincerity in their plea for help. Moved by their commitment to the puppies despite their circumstances, he asked if the couple would allow the department to step in and assist. The couple immediately agreed.
Community Connections Activated
Robles contacted Sgt. Benson, who in turn reached out to Retired Officer Ward, now serving as the department’s court security officer. Officer Ward’s wife is the founder of Save-A-Mutt, a nonprofit, foster-based rescue organization based in Stanwood, WA.
Though Ward could not be reached that night, Sgt. Benson didn’t give up. He called Retired Sgt. Becker, who jumped into action alongside his wife. The couple loaded up their truck and headed to the station shortly before midnight to assist.
Safe Haven for the Puppies
Upon arrival, it was determined the couple wished to keep two of the puppies due to their deep emotional connection with the litter. The remaining six puppies were safely surrendered to Save-A-Mutt.
To ensure their safety and comfort, Officer Robles purchased food for the puppies and coordinated with staff at Safeway, who provided a large, sturdy box for safe transport.
“It’s just a reminder of how much kindness still exists — not just within our department, but within our community,” said one officer at the scene.
A Generous Surprise
As the situation unfolded, a longtime Lake Forest Park resident, Mr. Brown, happened to call from the station’s wall phone. After learning what was happening, he generously offered to donate $1,500 toward the puppies’ care. After a quick discussion with Sgt. Benson, the donation was directed to Save-A-Mutt to help cover the costs of food, medical care, and placement.
More Than Just a Rescue
The couple declined further services for themselves, stating they were simply grateful the puppies were in good hands. Their selflessness and love for their dogs resonated deeply with those who helped that night.
“What started as a routine patrol turned into something far greater — a moment of human connection and collective compassion,” said Sgt. Benson.
About Save-A-Mutt
Founded in 2008, Save-A-Mutt began as a grassroots fundraiser and has since grown into a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming dogs — and occasionally cats — throughout Washington. The organization operates through a volunteer foster network, giving animals a chance at a better life in loving forever homes.
A Night That Brought Out the Best
Thanks to the quick actions of Officer Robles, Sgt. Benson, Retired Sgt. Becker and his wife, the support from Safeway, the generosity of Mr. Brown, and the commitment of Save-A-Mutt, this was a night that truly showcased the best of Lake Forest Park.
In a world often filled with headlines of hardship, this act of compassion served as a reminder that small actions — when taken with heart — can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
