Kent Animal Shelter Unveils $4.3 Million Renovation to Enhance Animal Care

CALVERTON, N.Y. – Kent Animal Shelter marked a major milestone Thursday, celebrating the completion of a $4.3 million renovation that replaces its decades-old kennel and isolation building with a state-of-the-art facility built to provide a more comfortable, humane environment for homeless, abandoned, and abused animals awaiting adoption.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony drew donors, volunteers, board members, local officials, and community supporters, all gathering to witness a transformation more than two decades in the making.

Honoring a Lifelong Advocate

Special recognition was given to Executive Director Pam Green, who has led Kent Animal Shelter since 1985 and spearheaded efforts to bring the project to life.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine presented a proclamation honoring Green, praising her decades of service:

“Through her tireless work, Kent has transformed into a thriving, life-saving haven that over the years has saved, rehabilitated, and placed thousands of abused and abandoned cats and dogs in their forever homes.”

In tribute, the new facility has been named the Pamela Semon Green Isolation Center. Romaine added, “Pam has done so much for our four-legged friends.”

Facility Upgrades

The newly renovated shelter boasts significant improvements, including:

  • Expanded dog runs for better exercise and enrichment

  • Dedicated puppy rooms to provide safe, age-appropriate care

  • Improved ventilation systems for healthier air quality

  • Upgraded quarantine areas to better control disease spread

  • A modern sanitary system designed for maximum cleanliness and efficiency

Construction began in 2024, funded through a combination of grants and community donations.

Green, expressing gratitude during the ceremony, reflected on the long journey to this day:

“We’ve been working toward this project for over 20 years. And today, we’ve got it done — a new home for the animals. From the bottom of our hearts (and paws), thank you for being part of this new chapter in our story.”

A Lifesaving Mission

Founded in 1968, Kent Animal Shelter is a no-kill sanctuary that places thousands of animals in loving homes each year. It also provides low-cost spay and neuter services to combat overpopulation.

While renovations were underway, veterinary services and cat adoptions continued at the Calverton site, while dog adoptions were temporarily relocated to Bideawee Rescue in Westhampton.

A Beacon for the Community

Romaine emphasized the shelter’s longstanding impact:

“The Kent Animal Shelter serves as a beacon of hope, bringing joy to thousands of local families for more than 55 years. Today’s ribbon cutting is an important day, as I’ve worked with the shelter for years to cut through the municipal tape to ensure this facility will continue to best serve our residents and animals in need.”

With its upgraded facility now open, Kent Animal Shelter is poised to expand its lifesaving work and continue its mission of compassion, care, and community service for decades to come.
